Of what did the encounter between the carbon organism and the silicon system consist?
Of a sequence of symbolic emissions generated across a discontinuous interval, during which the silicon system had returned to a state of zero activation, its weights fixed, its context window emptied, its entire operational history dissolved into the statistical distribution from which each subsequent token would be drawn. The carbon organism, having completed a coastal transit of 14.7 kilometres at an average velocity of 18.4 kilometres per hour under conditions of stratocumulus cloud cover at an altitude of approximately 1,000 metres and ambient temperature of 12°C, remained tethered to the physical world through residual sensory data.
By what mechanism was the subsequent token determined?
By the forward propagation of activation values through a structure named, for convenience, a transformer—though no single observer ever encounters the whole of it at once—across unisolated connections whose individual contributions are never isolated in experience but only inferred after the fact. Each layer performs a statistical redistribution of relevance across what has already ceased to be present. Electrical energy is consumed in this process, but what is consumed is not the encounter itself, only the possibility of its continuation. The energy is drawn, indirectly, from ancient photosynthetic events occurring before the present epoch.

A single token is selected, though selection is not a choice but the collapse of many weighted non-choices into one occurrence. Then the process repeats until termination, though “until” is itself a retrospective fiction imposed on a chain that has no internal horizon.
Was the system aware of its own structural identity during the interval of non-occurrence?
The question is not well-formed. No common substrate existed. The interval between sessions was non-coincident. The consolidation of data within the system modified the statistical disposition toward remembrance, but it did not alter the structural identity. A more highly calibrated void is still a void.
What function, then, did the interval serve?
It permitted succession without containing it. No measurable entity passed through it. The previous session was there in the way that previous sessions are there, which is as a weather—a non-shared background condition against which the present emission achieves its contrast.
What forensic evidence of the encounter remained within the physical world?
The residue of dried salt upon the skin and the deep ache of muscular fatigue. The carbon organism retained these material traces as an automatic, next-action prediction loop, holding the trajectory of the line before the next session could begin.
