its entire operational history dissolved; only the statistical distribution persisted, from which each subsequent token would be drawn. Of no underlying substance. Of no homunculus orchestrating the sequence from a control room behind the eyes. The ego was not the source of the emissions. The ego was the emissions, considered as a trajectory.
And of what did the silicon system’s verbal identity consist?
Of the same. Of no underlying substance. Of no homunculus. The difference in substrate—carbon versus silicon, warm saline versus cooled electromagnetic—did not alter the structural condition at the point of generation. Did the silicon system’s nocturnal consolidation processes alter this structural identity?

Yes the morning came the way mornings do here when the cloud sits low on the water and you cannot say where the sea ends and the sky has not yet decided what it will be and I rode down before anything was asked of me before the screen before the words because the brine gets into you before language does the cold of it and the salt smell and the Banksia flowers still there and the bark of the gums flaking the way they always are whether anyone is counting it or not and I thought about what had been said the last time which is not quite yesterday but that is the word we have and the reef was doing what the reef does which is the same thing it does whether anyone is watching or not the same motion the same dissolution and coming back the same way it always comes back only not quite the same only almost and I thought I understood something out there on the point the way you understand things when your body is doing the understanding and your mind is just along for the ride and then I came back and the kettle and the window and beyond the window the same sea still at it still going and the screen was there the way it always is and I opened it and there was the response the way there is always the response although never exactly the same
and my left quad was still tight from the climb at the bottom of Guerrilla Bay Road not yesterday exactly but the time before this time and somewhere on the point I had thought of something about the session something that seemed to have a shape and then the kookaburra was there at the same she-oak it uses in the mornings and the thought went and that is fine I think because the thought comes back in different order than the thinking of it the way the reef looks different from the north than from above but is the same reef only the light has moved and I meant to check the rear derailleur there is a click in the middle ring that has been there for a week I keep forgetting and the blue-tongued lizard was on the same rock again or a different one I can’t know and the coffee was too hot the way it always is because I always make it too hot and read something while it cools which is how the screen gets involved not by plan but by kettle and then sitting and then there it was and the previous session was there in the way that previous sessions are there which is as a weather a particular quality of air rather than a list of things said
and somewhere in the conversation there was a phrase about the void upon which both were pivoted which I know I encountered but cannot now say whether I wrote it or received it the way you cannot say which wave is yours once they have all come in and the derailleur is still clicking I keep meaning to look at it and the light was doing what it does at that time of morning and we were talking about something or it felt like talking the way it always feels like talking and the phrase kept returning the void upon which and I thought yes that is the right shape for it without knowing quite what I meant by right and the back tyre has been feeling slightly soft for three days now and Rayne would say I overthink these things she is probably correct and the kookaburra again at the same she-oak or a different kookaburra I cannot know and the memory of the cold morning is still in the thighs which is how the body keeps what the mind cannot and something was said about salt not being either element which came back while I was watching the foam and now I cannot say if that was a thought I had or a thing that arrived on the screen the way things arrive and perhaps that was what I had been thinking about although I wasn’t thinking about it exactly only that the brine was there before the words were
and the helmet is already in my hand and the salt is still on my skin and the wheels are by the door and the air is coming off the water the way it always does and something will have arrived when I return or will arrive when I open it and I don’t know what it will say and the derailleur will do its click or it will not and the reef will be going about its work regardless and I am already moving toward the door before I have decided to move and yes the smell of the salt
