I. Dramatis Personae
Arthur Peake — Scribe to the College. Exhaustion carried in the sinews of the forearm and shoulder rather than declared. His boots and frieze coat are stiffened with low-fen clay; his fingers are permanently darkened by gall ink. His right wrist bears the four pale, sunken furrows of the hemp trace-twine with which he dragged the hand-barrow. He speaks rarely; his primary stage action is inscription, casting, trimming the quill, and defending the perimeter of the quire with his physical body.
Hester Pringle — Custodian of the parish memorandum book. Unyielding, deliberate, unimpressed by ecclesiastical rank or collegiate seniority. She controls the sequence, reads the items without cadence or inflection, and governs the physical transit of the iron vestry key. She does not plead or negotiate; her authority is rooted entirely in her knowledge of the parish’s physical assets and her stewardship of the record.
The Provost of St. Jude-in-the-Fen — Representative of the collegiate corporation. Shrewd, defensive, steeped in legal precedent. He is neither tyrant nor benefactor: he views the parish fabric and its living solely through the lens of collegiate endowment and prior liability. He possesses the authority of the corporate seal, the red sarcinet ribbon, and the silver signet ring.
The Apparitor of the Consistory Court — The external instrument of diocesan jurisdiction. Functional, procedural, carrying the Bishop’s sealed parchment cylinder of sequestration. He represents the summary power of the diocesan ordinary: indifferent to the local ledger, intent on attaching all tangible goods before collegiate debt can be enrolled.
Crump — The Bailiff’s man / Churchwarden’s proxy. Physically compromised, caught between communal obligation and collegiate pressure. Wears worn pigskin gloves; handles the measuring rod and the bier.
The Ticket-Lad — A mute witness and atmospheric indicator. Attends the peat brazier, fetches the sand caster, and marks the draft through the uncaulked door-sill.
II. Jurisdictional & Legal Mechanics
Writ of Sequestration: Dilapidations of the Chancel
| (Attempts summary seizure)
v
PARISH OF ST. JUDE-IN-FEN =====BARRIER===== COLLEGIATE FOUNDATION
Unenrolled Goods / Chattels Prior Creditor by Contract
– Salt-butter firkin (56 lbs) – 93 Audited Ledger Items
– Ash timber & lead flashing – Perfected Corporate Lien
– Iron chest & vestry keys – Vermilion Seal “Enrolled”
The Doctrine of the Prior Lien
Under English common law, a Bishop’s Writ of Sequestration for church dilapidations operates as a summary execution against the fruits, profits, and movable chattels of an ecclesiastical benefice in gross. However, the diocesan sequestrator cannot attach or impound assets already legally encumbered by a perfected, pre-existing corporate liability.
The Mechanism of the Ninety-Three Entries
The collegiate audit is not an internal balance sheet; it is an active legal fortification. Every entry recorded from Hester’s memorandum into the collegiate ledger transforms a vulnerable parish asset (timber, ironwork, shingles, butter) into a specific disbursement satisfying the College’s historical building advances.
The Absolute Condition of Closure
An open, uncompleted account confers zero protection—it functions in law merely as an unliquidated admission of parish debt, vulnerable to immediate seizure upon notice. To establish legal priority, all ninety-three items must be cast, agreed upon, bound in collegiate red sarcinet tape, and stamped under the Provost’s corporate seal before the Apparitor’s cylinder crosses the threshold stone. If sealed, the living’s assets are legally disbursed to the College; the Bishop’s officers can attach only an empty room.

IV. Forensic Material Mechanics
1. The Chemistry of the Black Ingress (The Wainscot Seep)
The creeping black waterline rising along the plaster is not clean marsh water or yellow dairy brine.
- The Solvent: The fifty-six-pound firkin of autumn butter is packed under saturated salt-brine. Resting on freezing, unsealed oak planks, the brine slowly leaches through the drying staves and leaks into the seam between the floor and the wall.
- The Solute: Beneath the oak floorboards lie centuries of deposited lime-dust, soot swept from the hearth, and coal-grit packed between the joists. The dense salt-brine dissolves this acidic sediment into a thick, pitch-black liquor.
- Capillary Attraction: The unheated base of the wall consists of porous, unsealed slaked lime plaster. The dry lime acts as a continuous porous wick, drawing the black fen-liquor upward against gravity in an inch-a-minute tidal crawl.
2. The Mechanics of the Saponification Rings
The four milky circles on the table surface are chemical artifacts, not decorative water rings.
- The Leachate: Attic rainwater seeping through the rotting oak lath leaches calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) and peat tannins from the old horsehair plaster, concentrating into a dense, oily brown droplet.
- The Substrate: The audit table is heart-of-oak, saturated through decades of treatment with raw linseed oil (rich in linolenic and oleic fatty acids).
- The Reaction (Saponification): When the alkaline calcium hydroxide droplet strikes the oiled timber, it does not bead or spatter. The free calcium reacts immediately with the fatty acids of the drying oil at the interface, forming insoluble calcium carboxylates (calcium soap). This micro-emulsion leaves a permanent, flat, chalky-white ring that cures into the wood.
V. Master Dramaturgical Notes
Acoustic Subordination
The soundscape is the primary clock of the drama. Arthur must dip his quill on the sharp mechanical sound of the falling ceiling drop and write during the cold void between the drops. The rhythm of the spoken lines (“Item eighty-nine… Two shillings and a penny”) must lock directly into the mechanical tempo of the room, preventing the dialogue from slipping into conventional theatrical cadence.
Strict Transient Cutting
Every transition in the final cut must be an instantaneous straight cut timed directly to a mechanical impact—the bodkin’s oak strike, the droplet’s timber hit, the hemp knot drawn tight, the iron carriage brake. Dissolves, fading, or cross-cutting are forbidden.
Actor Freedom vs. Mechanical Rigidity
The mechanical staging—the placement of the four rings (three on wood, the fourth breaching the vellum edge), the wax seal, and the binding of the key—must remain exact and inflexible. However, actors and directors must not be constrained by stopwatch seconds: the emotional intensity of the scene is discovered in the silence, the stiffening of cold fingers, and the physical resistance of the ink.
The Silence of the Ending
No concluding speeches, moral assessments, or explanatory epilogues are permitted. The College achieves its corporate record through vermilion wax; the Apparitor arrives at an empty jurisdictional breach; Arthur accepts bodily custody of the key. The drama concludes not with a legal verdict, but with the completed bundles sitting beside the creeping black water while the second boot strikes the threshold.
