The Thalweg Sequence: Fluvial Sketches I–V

The Thalweg Sequence: Fluvial Sketches I–V

I. The Threshold of Motion

the threshold of motion is not marked by sound
but by a shudder in the lower grain;
before the water clears the shoaling ground
the traction load begins to take the strain.
no eye records the critical shear stress
that lifts the quartz against its settled mass,
nor flags the shallowing where velocities
accelerate as bedrock sections pass.
first rolls the basalt pebble, blunt and grey,
too broad to vault, too massive to subside;
it grinds the bedrock till it finds the way
prescribed by gravity and falling tide.
behind it, in a skipping, low arc leap,
the saltating sands resume their ancient track,
unseated from the silence of the deep
to strike the lee-slope of the transverse bar,
and tumble into rest beneath the black
and heavy surge that drives them from afar.
by grain and weight the channel takes and took
whatever mass the gradient had to spill;
the sorted sand is laid along the spit,
the heavier grit is dropped upon the splay,
and the load goes down as the load was brought —
sorted, and set, and pausing on the way.

II. Bedforms & Dune Migration

the flat bed yields its uniformity
not to design, but to the drag it bears;
beneath the shear of boundary velocity
the turbulent profile steepens as it shears.
a wave forms in the sand: the stoss ascends,
compressed beneath accelerated flow,
where friction steepens till the current bends
and spills the crest to feed the trough below.
here profile is the instrument of drag:
the ridge perturbs the current in its race,
a tripping threshold where the volumes lag,
inducing wake across the boundary space.
past the sharp lip the eddy splits and reels;
the separated flow spins in the lee,
while down the slip-face slope the avalanche steals,
shedding its grain at rest, unstable, free.
by grain-fall and by slip the traveling dune
advances downstream on its sheared-off back;
it keeps no mark of morning or of noon,
yet buries dipping foresets in its track.
the mobile crest dissolves as it proceeds,
consumed to lay the slope on which it rides;
the dune moves onward where the current leads,
and leaves cross-bedded sand as it subsides.

III. The Meander Cut-Bank & Point Bar

the channel curves: the lateral volumes strain
against the outer bank that bars the turn;
there superelevation tilts the plane,
and downwelling currents excavate and churn.
the spiral cross-flow sweeps the channel floor:
sheared from the scour, the rolling gravels glide
across the bottom to the inner shore,
to shed their burden on the shoaling side.
there, as the secondary cross-flow wanes,
the inner margin gathers what is shed:
the basal gravel locks in basal planes,
while upward-fining sands accrete the bed.
across the thalweg, opposite the sheets
where lateral-accretion beds incline,
the undermined alluvial terrace meets
the continuous hunger of the scoured design.
scoured at the toe, the high alluvial wall
hangs in the standing hazard of its fall;
above the scoop, where water strips the base,
the woven roots of terrace-turf suspend
a cantilevered weight that cannot last,
till tensile tolerances snap and bend:
the shear-plane splits, the fracture opens fast,
and to the trough the loosened mass is freed.

IV. The Slackwater Ledger

the gradient dies: against the tidal head
the decelerating thalweg checks its track;
the heavy core drops early to the bed,
a grounding lag before the reach turns slack.
the intermediate sands forsake their pace,
unloaded where the levee margins splay;
while kept aloft within the slowing space,
the wash-load and colloidal silts delay.
borne onward where the wedge of ocean slides
beneath the surface plume of river-fresh,
the denser brine arrests the outward tides,
and stalls the boundary in a static mesh.
diffuse repulsions shrink: the plates combine,
bound into flocs that aggregate and grow;
with larger mass they sink through heavy brine
at swifter fall-rates to the floor below.
laid horizontal in the estuarine slack,
the clay-flocs drape the floor from edge to edge;
discontinuous laminae, grey and black,
accrete in patches on the basal wedge.
a fragile calm suspends the channel here:
the settling muds accumulate in bands
beneath the surface boundary, brackish, clear;
the flocs descend, and transport halts on sands.

V. The Breach & Littoral Drift

the catchment fills: behind the barred lagoon
the hydrograph mounts upward, steep and blind;
not by the gentle measure of the moon,
but head compounded as the contours bind
the falling sky. the slackened reach awakes:
re-energized, the rising waters strain;
the surface tilts, the static boundary breaks,
and shear returns along the floor again.
the sheet gives way: scoured by the sudden head,
the millimeter laminae unbind;
torn into rip-up clasts, the muds are sped
with sand and shingle in the surge behind.
down to the spit the gathered volume pours,
crowding the barrier of drifted stone,
until the overtopping torrent roars
and carves a spillway through the gravel cone.
the notch gives way: the breached embankment cleaves;
the cut throat widens as the wash divides;
no barrier retains what fluid leaves,
nor dams the torrent as the channel rides.
past the drowned bar the unrecorded plume
jets through the surf toward the shelf’s relief,
depositing its clasts in turbid gloom,
and leaves the sea to break upon the reef.
