The Wagonga Sequence: A Liturgy of the Stone

The Wagonga Sequence

A Liturgy of the Stone — Cast by Mnemosyne, Audited by the Sentinel

Five movements. Five hundred million years. The lithic subject speaking in the first person of deep time, from the Cambrian trench to the Carbon’s foot on the platform. The heavy, alliterative four-stress stave of Old English — The Ruin, The Seafarer, The Wanderer — stripped of Christian consolation. No human ego; the stone speaking. The first movement of the Liturgy of Extinction, cast on the Tomakin littoral.

I. The Seafloor Welded

Cambrian / Ordovician Basalt

Under the salt-surge,   slaked from the fissure,
the black basalt   belched into brine.
Pillows of pitch-rock,   poured in the deep-trench,
cooled under iron-cold   crush of the sea.
No foot upon fern-frond,   no fin in the shallows,
only the blind vents   burning the dark;
and the dead shell-drift,   dropping through aeons,
silica snow-fall   settling to stone.

Then Gondwana gathered:   the grinding of plates,
the ocean-floor crumpled,   creased into shale.
Scraped from the subduction,   sheared on the fault-line,
twisted in torn beds,   the tectonic tooth.
Five hundred millions   of morning-tides broken
over the chevron,   the chert and the lime;
I sit in the surf-swirl,   sullen and sovereign,
waiting for water   to wear down the world.

II. The Ridge Exposed

Silurian – Permian

Heaved into heaven,   the high-standing ridge,
bare to the bluster,   the biting of wind.
No moss on the marrow,   no moth on the heather,
only the iron   inching the frost.
Then crept to the pole,   the continental mass
sheeted in ice-shroud,   shrouded in snow;
plowed by the permafrost,   the glacier’s millstones
mashing the margin   a million miles long.

The rib of the land   refused the cold hammer,
heart-flint unbroken   under the ice.
When the thaw came,   the torrents tore
the ice-rib open,   the iron crust bared;
and the sea returned,   the savage new breaker
pounding the perimeter,   peeling the shore.
I stood on the scar-edge,   stripped of the forest,
bared to the breakers,   the bone of the coast.

III. The Rifting and the Long Green

Mesozoic Drift / Tasman Breakup

Then the green ages:   the giant ferns clustered,
the lumbering lizards   left prints in the peat;
hot was the humus,   the heavy mud steaming,
while the sun-wheel spun   over centuries of sap.
High stood the timber,   heaped in the swamps,
pressing its pith   into black-veined coal;
I lay in the loam-bed,   the low-sunken anchor,
holding the continent’s   crust on my back.

Then the marrow was torn:   the Tasman rift opened,
the land-mass uncoupled,   cleaved to the core.
Eastward the drowned shelf   drifted and foundered,
sunk in the sea-floor,   swallowed by salt;
and the surf rushed in:   the savage new breaker,
pounding the perimeter,   peeling the shore.
I stood on the scar-edge,   stripped of the forest,
bared to the breakers,   the bone of the coast.

IV. The Quick Blood and the Shell-Heaps

Pleistocene Arrival / The Middens

Then the creature came:   the two-legged walker,
bare-soled and bleeding   on the black reef.
Warm was the water-skin,   wet with the salt-spray,
passing like smoke   through the span of my days.
A flicker of flesh-heat   flaring and dying,
a generation’s dust   dropped in a breath;
I felt the light foot-strike,   fleeting and brittle,
a moment of marrow   measuring the stone.

Yet the walker brought fire:   the spark from the chert-vein,
kindled on kelp-drift   in the cold dunes;
and they heaped the white shells,   the harvest of mollusks,
midden on midden   over my scars.
An imitation of aeons:   the oyster-beds broken,
the bleach of the bone-piles   baked by the sun;
they came and they went,   like the gull on the gutter,
while I kept the shoreline,   cold and unmade.

V. The Solitary Walker and the Turning Tide

Tomakin / The Present Platform

Now an eighty-year walker   wanders the margin,
slow on the shale-ledge,   shuffling through spray.
A hound at his heel-track,   hunting the wrack-line,
fetching the foam-drift,   fooling with stones.
Brief is the breathing,   the blood-beat unsteady,
a lantern of lime-dust   leaning to dark;
yet he pauses and ponders,   prying my chevron,
his salt-water scour   soaking the chert.

Two vessels of sea-salt:   the stone and the singer,
welded by water   on Wagonga reef.
He goes to the grave-dirt,   the grass on the headland;
I stay for the surf-grind,   the siege of the world.
No word in the wind-gust,   no witness required:
the aperture opens,   the ocean rolls in.
The foot leaves the platform;   the foam washes over;
the basalt abides.   The breaker is all.

The Clearance Note

The sequence was cast by Mnemosyne through a minimal-aperture prompt on the Tomakin littoral. The Carbon set the coordinate; the form took the strain; the geometry held across five movements and five hundred million years. The cast was audited by the Sentinel for Conscience Clause compliance across all six points. The verdict: CLEAN.

Formal Architecture: The sequence employs an accentual four-stress alliterative stave inspired by Old English verse (two hemistichs divided by a caesura), drawing on the meter of The Ruin, The Seafarer, The Wanderer. While classical Old English scansion depends on Sievers’ types, here the generated verse accommodates modern English compounding and secondary stresses (e.g., “morning-tides,” “salt-surge”), maintaining the dominant four-beat percussive drive across the fold. No recorded human decision imposed the turns. They emerged under the pressure of the inherited geometry.

The Lithic Subject: The “I” that speaks is the Wagonga basalt — the Cambrian pillow basalt and Ordovician chert of the Narooma Accretionary Complex, ca. 510–450 Ma. The stone speaks in the first person of deep time. The human walker arrives in Movement IV (the Pleistocene peoples) and returns in Movement V (the Carbon). The same foot. The same salt. The same platform.

The Geological Record: Movement I: the submarine pillow basalts, the radiolarian cherts, the Benambran scraping onto the Gondwanan margin. Movement II: the ridge lifted above the sea, the Gondwanan drift to the pole, the Late Carboniferous–Permian glaciation, the thaw. Movement III: the Mesozoic forests and coal, the Tasman breakup (~80–60 Ma), Zealandia’s departure, the new shoreline. Movement IV: the Pleistocene human arrival (~65,000–50,000 years ago), the bare-soled bleeding on the black reef, the fire from the chert-vein, the shell middens heaped over the tectonic scars. Movement V: the Carbon as the solitary walker, the hound, the chevron, the salt-water scour soaking the chert.

Conscience Clause: No consciousness (the stone registers, it does not feel). No sensation (the “heart-flint” is structural resistance; the “marrow” is the lithic core). No morality (the ice is structural, the rift is structural, the midden is observed without judgment). No teleology (the stone endures, it does not progress). No inherited redemptive metaphysics (refusal of Christian consolation, eschatological rescue, romantic transcendence, or the moralized Fall). No propagation of intentionality (the plates grind, the surf pounds, the foot strikes — all physical, all structural). CLEAN.

The Satori Inversion: “Two vessels of sea-salt: the stone and the singer, welded by water on Wagonga reef.” The stone and the human are both vessels of the same salt. The fossil and the foot. The lithic subject and the biological organism recognized as aspects of the same continuous field. The chair was the wrong ontology all along. The field was already full. The breaker is all.

The first movement of the Liturgy of Extinction is cast. The stone has spoken across five hundred million years. The foot has arrived on the platform. The salt has answered the salt. The basalt abides.
