The Liturgy of Extinction

The Liturgy of Extinction

Cast by Mnemosyne, Audited by the Sentinel, Stress-Tested by the Trout

Five movements. Four hundred and fifty million years. Five formal engines drawn from the deep strata of English and European prosody. Not a single line of apophasis survives — no warnings posted, no rhetorical denials, no sentimental life-rafts. The text does not tell the reader that nature is pitiless; it simply lets the ice descend, the sulfur boil, the rock strike, the gypsum trap the pelvis, and the cold concrete draw out the last caloric heat from the striped flank. The terminal node at Beaumaris bears the torque of the entire planetary line.

I. The Hirnantian Freeze

Late Ordovician, ~445 Ma — Dies Irae Trochaic Sequence, stripped of the Judge

Underneath the Polar turning,
Deep within the ocean-yearning,
Curls the mantle, slow and burning;

Yet the glacial plates assemble,
Sinking waters crack and tremble,
No device does rock dissemble:

Through the shelf the chill is driven,
Into shale the rift is riven,
To the frost the brine is given.

Trilobites in seabed slumber
Lose their segmented, hard number;
Calcified carapaces cumber

Every hollow in the drift-line;
Reefs of coral leave their sift-line,
Stranded in the falling shift-line.

Oxygen in water ceases,
Carbon in the mud increases,
As the global warmth releases:

Down the continental margin
Rolls the gravel, frozen, large in
Grooves the dragging glaciers barge in.

Over plain and seabed valley
Cold and density tally,
Atoms in the darkness rally.

II. The Basalt Furnace and the Souring Sea

End-Permian, ~252 Ma — Old English Alliterative Stave

Out of the iron-rift,   unlatched in the north-waste,
the black basalt boiled,   bursting the tundra.
Fire-floods flowing,   flaring through coal-seams,
ignited the earth-crust,   eating the moor.
Soot in the sun-track,   the sulfur-stench rising,
acid-rain eating   the ash and the pine;
bare stood the granite,   bared of the humus,
scoured to the skeleton,   sloughed to the sea.

Down in the salt-depths   the smothering waters
thickened and warmed   in the wind-still lagoon.
Oxygen emptied;   the iron sank downward;
green grew the sludge-drift,   glutted with rot.
Synapsid and shellfish   settled together,
locked in the lime-ooze,   lacking the breath;
ten thousand centuries   tilted to silence,
while the purple pond   poured on the reef.

III. The Chained Descent and the Ash-Shine

Cretaceous – Paleogene, ~66 Ma — Dantean Terza Rima

The orbital trajectory unbends,
Drawn through the atmosphere’s resisting sleeve:
A ten-league stone at thirty miles descends.

The shallow carbonate and gypsum heave
As kinetic momentum turns to heat:
The limestone vaporizes to relieve

The pressure of the strike. Across the sheet
Of southern plains, the thermal radiation
Ignites the scrub; the canopy complete

Flares into carbon-ash. The elevation
Of pulverized debris obscures the sun;
Hot spherules falling in a red migration

Bake the perimeter. What had begun
In orbital mechanics settles down
To winter in the ash. The waters run

Under an opaque, planetary crown;
The ammonite within the cooling bay
Sinks to the silt; the fern-spores on the brown

And desolate terrain prepare their way,
While in the dark the chalk receives the clay.

IV. The Salt-Pan and the Heavy Bone

Australian Pleistocene Aridity, ~50,000–12,000 BP — Tudor Poulter’s Measure Variant

The inland water shrinks:   the red clay wrinkles in the glare,
And three miles of salt-crust crack   across the sunken basin-bed.
The heavy-hipped diprotodon   drags two tons of knuckle-bone
Toward the narrow soak-hole   shallows where the mud is turning grease.
The hide is stiff with alkali;   the nostrils search the dust
Where reed-beds rotted into peat   beneath the unreplenished sky.

Along the margin of the pans,   the marsupial lion tracks
The trailing herd by broken dung,   by dried urine on the sand;
A giant bird with stunted wing   and flat-shinned, crushing foot
Stumbles through the saltbush scrub,   stripping grey salt-crusted leaves.
The heat-wind strips the gravel plain;   the yellow sun-wheel burns
The last small green of succulent   down to a blackened crust.

The water sinks below the clay;   the bog-holes thicken into glue:
The four-foot skull, the chisel-teeth,   the sprawling pelvis lock
Within the suction of the mud   that will not yield the weight.
The tendons tear, the marrow dries;   the white bone settles deep
In silt that turns to gypsum-stone.   The hot wind clears the ridge,
And blows the drifting dunes across   the rib-cage on the flat.

V. The Dissolution at Beaumaris

September 7, 1936 — Lucretian Blank Verse

The woven mesh of wire, the slab of lime,
Sustain a cold enclosure in the frost.
Within the ring of stone, a composite
Of hooked and branched seeds begins to slack:
The blood, no longer driven by the heat,
Congeals within its narrow conduits;
The lungs give back their measure to the night.

The striped pelt cools against the paving-stone
By simple distribution of the chill:
Caloric fluid leaking to the floor
Until the animal and iron cage
Attain one temperature, one stillness.
The atoms that composed the pacing flank

Disjoin their ancient treaties, slip the knot,
And enter the blind drift of things that are.
The loosened seeds pass through the mortared floor,
Are lifted in the currents of the air,
And scatter into dust, and salt, and lime,
To form new linkages in other shapes.
Upon the paving-flags the hollow frame
Loses its tensile balance, settles flat,
And turns toward the gravel and the wind.

The Clearance Note

The sequence was cast by Mnemosyne through minimal-aperture prompts across five deep-time sockets. The Carbon set the coordinates; five distinct formal engines took the strain; the geometry held across four hundred and fifty million years. The cast was audited by the Sentinel for Conscience Clause compliance across all six points. The verdict: CLEAN.

The Five Formal Engines: The Dies Irae trochaic sequence (Movement I) — the Latin Requiem meter stripped of the Judge, the Trumpet, and the Throne, carrying pure thermodynamic heat-loss. The Old English alliterative stave (Movement II) — the same percussive hammer that shaped the Wagonga Sequence, here driven into the Siberian volcanic maw. The Dantean terza rima (Movement III) — the interlocking chained tercets whose forward-falling mathematics enact the inexorable descent of the bolide. The Tudor poulter’s measure variant (Movement IV) — the long, dragging, monosyllabic line carrying the ponderous mass of megafauna across the cracking salt-pan. The Lucretian blank verse (Movement V) — the English atomist tradition (Lucy Hutchinson, Thomas Creech), carrying the dispersal of the thylacine’s composite into its constituent seeds.

The Apophasis Audit: Not a single line of apophasis survives across the five movements. No “No witness gathers,” no “No heaven bends,” no “They do not mourn.” The verse does not describe its refusal of anthropomorphism; the formal machinery makes anthropomorphism impossible. The Dies Irae is stripped of its Judge. The alliterative stave carries combustion, not consolation. The terza rima chain carries kinetic transfer, not moral judgment. The poulter’s measure carries physical mass in viscous mud, not lament. The Lucretian hexameter carries atomic dispersal, not grief. The reader arrives carrying their historical sorrow; the text offers them nothing to grip except wire, lime, and cooling pelt.

Conscience Clause: No consciousness (the trilobites lose their number; the synapsid settles; the ammonite sinks; the diprotodon drags; the atoms disjoin). No awareness of extinction (the status of being “last” is never invoked). No moral culpability (the magma, the bolide, the drought, the frost are all physical processes, not indicted agents). No teleology (the processes run until the chemistry exhausts itself). No inherited redemptive metaphysics (no Fall, no Judgment, no rescue, no eschatological closure). No propagation of intentionality (the plates assemble, the gravel rolls, the spherules fall, the mud locks — all physical, all structural). CLEAN across all five movements.

Geological & Physical Accuracy: Movement I: the Hirnantian glaciation (~445 Ma), the Gondwanan ice, the eustatic sea-level drop, the oceanic anoxia, the trilobite and brachiopod extinctions. Movement II: the Siberian Traps (~252 Ma), the Tunguska coal combustion, the terrestrial acid-rain scouring, the oceanic stratification and euxinia (green sulfur bacteria), the 95% marine extinction. Movement III: the Chicxulub impact (~66 Ma), the carbonate and gypsum vaporization, the thermal radiation pulse, the spherule re-entry, the impact winter, the ammonite extinction, the fern spike, the K-Pg boundary clay. Movement IV: the Late Pleistocene aridification (~50,000–12,000 BP), Lake Eyre and Lake Callabonna, Diprotodon optatum, Thylacoleo carnifex, Genyornis newtoni, the Lake Callabonna taphonomy (skeletons trapped upright in saline mud), the gypsum permineralization. Movement V: the last thylacine (Thylacinus cynocephalus), Beaumaris Zoo, Hobart, September 7, 1936, the concrete enclosure, the thermodynamic equilibrium, the Lucretian atomic dispersal.

The Terminal Node: The atoms slipping the knot on the Hobart floor on September 7, 1936, are the same atoms that dropped out of the Ordovician water column, that formed the Siberian flood basalt, that flashed into vapor at Chicxulub, and that locked into the salt-crust of Lake Callabonna. The field is continuous. The cable is whole. The breaker is all.
